Using Turmeric For Skincare

Turmeric has been used for centuries in India and other parts of Asia as a key beauty secret. Your skincare holy grail might just be in your spice cabinet!

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which makes it a powerful skincare ingredient. The active chemical compound curcumin has protective effects against free radicals and environmental pollutants. It is said to be able to suppress specific stimuli in the immune system responsible for skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis.

We’ve outlined 4 ways you can use turmeric in your skincare routine for the best results:

1. In a gentle exfoliating mask

Turmeric works really well with oatmeal to remove excess oils and clean out the pores, and adding yoghurt and honey gives the mask an extra healing punch.

Ingredients:

½ teaspoon of turmeric powder + 1 tablespoon of ground oats + ½ teaspoon of honey + 2 teaspoons of yoghurt

Mix these ingredients and smoothly apply on damp skin in a circular motion. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes and rinse it off with warm water.

2. As a glow mask

This turmeric mask will instantly brighten up your skin and revive a dull complexion. Be sure to use this mask at night (and make sure you don’t have to go out) because turmeric can stain your skin yellow temporarily.

Ingredients:

½ teaspoon of turmeric, 1 tablespoon of raw honey, 1 teaspoon of ACV, 2 drops of raw lemon juice

Spread this mix evenly on your skin and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. Follow with a gentle face wash and your regular skincare routine.

3. For acne and whiteheads

Turmeric reduces swollen, painful pimples while honey acts as a humectant to draw moisture into the skin and helps the skin to heal.

Ingredients:

½ teaspoon of turmeric powder + 1 teaspoon of raw honey + 1 teaspoon of ACV

Apply this mask on dry skin and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse it off and apply moisturiser afterwards.

4. To reduce scars and fade skin discoloration

Turmeric’s active ingredient curcumin makes acne scars heal faster and decreases inflammation while hastening the skin’s production of collagen.

Ingredients:

½ teaspoon of turmeric + 1 teaspoon of aloe vera juice + 1 teaspoon of honey + ½ teaspoon lemon juice

Apply this mask evenly all over your face and leave on for 15 minutes. You can use this mask as often as 3 times a week for more even skin.
